Throughout many of the books we have read, the inability of
the humans to recognize the potential ill effects of their creations and
subsequent alterations to them is very apparent. In Frankenstein, Victor never stops to think about
what could happen if his creation turned out horribly wrong. In RUR, the characters,
especially those involved in the robot’s production, never question what will
happen once the entire workforce is replaced with robots. In I, Robot, the robot designers
didn’t consider what would happen if they made robots whose mechanism of action
they didn’t understand or if they created robots that follow modified laws of
robotics. It seems that all of
these stories demonstrate what can happen when we operate outside our scope of
understanding or knowledge. While
sci-fi books are also known for their social/political commentary, a common
theme across many of the books we have read is the use of science fiction as a
warning for what can happen when we create without understanding the consequences.
